We had a busy week. I was in school all week, at least the three and a half days when there was school. We’re on our Easter break now. We won’t go back to school until Tuesday.
The weather was good most of the week. Josiah and I managed to get some things done in the yard. We raked up winter debris. We moved rhubarb plants to another part of the garden. They were crowding out my asparagus patch. We worked on preparing straw bales for eventual planting. It was good to work outdoors.
I’m still not fully recovered from my bout with whatever it was I had. My cough lingers. Because I was coughing so much I hurt my jaw. The temporomandibular joint my left side is out of whack which makes it difficult to open my mouth very far. My coughing also threw my back out of whack and caused my meralgia peraesthetica to flare up which makes my left leg feel like it’s burning. Sometimes I feel like I’m falling apart. Sorry to go on about my physical ailments, but it has been a big deal for me the last few weeks. It has shaped everything I do – eating, sleeping, walking, working. I am getting better, but I’m also getting impatient.
Tuesday night was our annual dessert theater. The high school students perform various musical numbers and during the intermission they serve the audience dessert. It’s always a well-attended event. Josiah was heavily involved in it. Of the nineteen numbers performed he was in twelve of them. He sang in two duets, three solos, sang in the choir, the select choir, played in the band and the jazz band. He did a good job. We’re pretty proud of him.

We had some good bird sightings during the week. There are wood ducks in the beaver pond. Down the road a few miles at the Waterwheel pond in Colesburg, there was a tundra swan one day. It was all by itself, which is odd.

Friday was Good Friday. We had no school. Josiah and I spent the day cleaning house. I also spent several hours listening to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, something I do every year on Good Friday. It is such a beautiful piece of music.
Late Friday night Stephen and Erin Pister arrived to spend Easter with us. They are staying over at Shilligs. Saturday morning the Pisters, the Shilligs, and the Howes drove up to Short Track, New York, to eat pancakes at Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn. They are famous for their all-you-can-eat buckwheat pancake breakfast with their own maple syrup. They are only open during the maple season. It was very good.

After breakfast, the Pisters and the Howes drove over to Seneca Lake to visit our friends Elder and Sister Emett at the church’s camp. They are the directors of the camp. They’ve been here two years and will go home to Utah in a few weeks. They’ve done so much to improve the camp. And every Sunday they come down to Wellsville to attend church with us. We’ll miss them when they go home. I took my scythe to show Elder Emett. They gave us a tour of the camp on golf carts. Then we ate lunch and came home.

Today is Easter, my favorite of the holy holidays. I was up before dawn this morning and watched the sunrise. The sky was clear and when the sun came up over the hills the world was flooded with golden sunlight. I spent the morning before church listening to Handel’s Messiah. Our church services were good. Erin and Stephen spoke. We sang the great Easter hymns, He Is Risen and Christ the Lord Is Risen Today. After church we had our Easter feast at the Shillig’s house. Elder and Sister Emett, Elder and Sister Miller, and one of our college students, Brynn Hyde, joined us in the feast. I made zesty carrots, fruit salad, and pickled eggs and red beets for the feast. The Shilligs provided the ham, asparagus, funeral potatoes, deviled eggs, rolls, and pies. It was all so delicious.

Now everyone has departed and we are settled in for the evening. There is no school tomorrow. I hope the weather is good so Josiah and I can get a lot of things done outdoors.
I hope you all had a joyous Easter.
